Making your Own Hologram

 Hello All

So today I decided we all need a bit of fun in the face of our forced isolation. I am a big Miranda Cosgrove fan. You know from that show iCarly that was on Nickelodeon from 2007 to 2012. It was a very silly show but I pretty much got my whole family watching it. She has a new show on CBS called Mission Unstoppable which is geared towards teaching STEM to young girls. She has a segment on the show in which she creates science based products and last week she created a hologram.  I thought it fit really well with the topic of AR.  Its one thing for the audience on this blog to go to a video to watch AR in action its another to create a hologram that you will be able to really see for yourself.  The great thing about this video is that we all have tablets and phones and the hologram is played on this device.  All you need is a ruler, pen, plastic paper (acetate) which can be found at a craft store, and clear tape.  I have included the video and underneath the video is hologram videos you play on your phone or tablet so it will show the hologram once you place your taped plastic trapezoidal prism (four trapezoids taped together).  Please post photos if you want of your finished product.  Again I just thought this would be a fun break from all of the reality we are currently facing.

  2. Hi Tammy,

Is it bad that I know who Miranda Cosgrove is and iCarly? My daughter was a big fan of iCarly and I was pretty much forced to watch it. Funny thing is, I actually enjoyed it. Anyway, I have always wondered what happened to Miranda, but thanks to you, now I know! As for the hologram, that is pretty amazing and it looks like fun. Thanks for sharing this!

I would totally love to blame my daughter for getting me to watch iCarly but nope I am a big Nickelodeon fan. I hope you get to try out making a hologram. Thanks for your comments.

  4. Tammy, we used to watch iCarly all the time with our oldest! Miranda Cosgrove has really grown up! This experiment looks awesome and definitely something my kids would enjoy. We do not have random sheets of plastic so I will need to pick some up but this does look like an easy fun way to make a hologram. Thank you for the ideas Tammy! I have enjoyed following your blog :)

I hope you will get the chance to create the holograms. She has but I am glad she is continuing to inspire young girls to go into STEM. Thanks for all of your supportive comments throughout the semester.

    2. Tammy, I have enjoyed your blog and I feel as you do. There are not enough females going into STEM fields and it is hard at times to find a role model/ mentor. I see a lot of progress though. I know it will continue.

  5. Tammy,
Unlike Mandy, I am still submitted to watching iCarly reruns with our youngest one. I think it is fantastic as well that she has continued in the industry know as an adult. More so, teaching STEM to young girls, having two girls, makes me proud to know that great examples are being created. Reading Mandy’s comments, it seems that we will be creating holograms in our near future. Thanks for the Idea. It appears that the larger the paper, the larger the hologram; this should be interesting.

I was really excited when I stumbled on this show and saw her advocating for girls and the study of STEM. I hope you have building those holograms. Thanks for commenting on my blog throughout the semester.

  7. Tammy,

Thank you for sharing this great idea. I can see this looks very interesting and engaging for children. I cannot believe how we continue to grow as a society and have products out there that will enhance our children’s learning development. This sounds like a great idea to try and looks sort of simple to do as well. Also, I think this is a great way to spend time with our love ones and learn in the process. Again, thank you for sharing.
