Coming from a medical background I am always looking into educational applications that involve science.  I am sure you are wondering what does that have to do with Instructional design or learning? Well I believe you need to know what tools are available to you. The majority of these applications are created for enhancing learning from all age groups.  I have provided a link below of a video that was filmed in Rotterdam.  Adults and children stand on a platform and in front of them is a video of all of these different AR images.  The video is only a minute and forty seven seconds, it definitely worth your time.  The viewer sees how astonished and awed the audience is with how life like the AR models appear to be.  I just wanted to provide a visual example of how cool AR really is. Some of the AR applications listed are worth looking into: there is Anatomy AR, Quiver 3D, Elements 4D, AR Solar system, AR cell, Spacecraft 30, Aurusma, Zookazam ect...  I could go on but most of these applications are on Google play or Itunes.  I certainly hope that as the technology improves that schools at all levels adopt some of these applications into their classroom instruction.

  1. Tammy,
Awesome post. I really enjoyed the video from National Geographic. That was impressive how they did the lightning, the rhino, dinosaurs, and the dolphin that was interesting to see. I can only imagine how much fun it would be to learn in today’s day and age to have access to that technology in the classroom. This type of interaction would keep students engaged in my opinion and promote more social interactions amongst them as well. I can only imagine the endless possibilities of being context and content into designing lesson plans using this technology. Great Post. Thanks for sharing with us.

After watching the video I would love to see that as well. Can you imagine as a child getting to see a dinosaur or dolphin come to life in front of you. Children today have so many opportunities to see life like items from our past. I can only imagine what the next five to ten years in Augmented Reality will bring.

  2. Tammy,
It truley is a amazing at all the things that are possible. This is just the beginning too. I can't wait to see where this goes in the medical field. When we eventually get to the stage of what we have seen in sci-fi moves. You know when they scan the body and the computer creates a virtual reality image of the person with injuries highlighted. It is exciting just to think of the possibilities. I hope they are come in our life time. Would love to see it. Look forward to your next post.

I know right, it would be great if some of the images you see on say Star Trek the Next Generation medical bay were a reality. I hope I will be around for some of the ground breaking medical imaging that AR will provide. Thanks for the post.

  3. Tammy, that sight was awesome. I looked through all the apps at the bottom of the page as well. One of them was skyview which I downloaded over the summer. If you enjoy star gazing it is a wonderful app that shows all of the constellations. Our youngest loves it but I do as well. All you have to do is open your camera and point it at the sky and it superimposes the name and shape of the constellation. Thank you for introducing me to more of these apps. They are educational and fun at the same time.

I will be trying that it sounds wonderful. Both Santa Fe and El Paso have great sky views so I should get a great shot for the application. Thanks for your comments.

  5. Tammy,
Really cool link, I watched the video and wished I could go there. Especially after seeing the boy at the end trying to fight the T-Rex! I also looked around the solar system link, I have always wanted to explore space and maybe colonize my own planet! (that's the boy inside me!) Knowing what tools are out there is a must. We have to know what there is so we can best facilitate learning at all levels, classes or home. Living blind is no way to fully live! Great post and thanks for the information!

  6. Tammy,
Very cool video and app list of AR platforms. The levels of technology involved in AR development are exceedingly high and continue to grow in capacity and capability each day. I know that many AR methods are used in the entertainment industry to bring impossible situations to life. A few years ago, I was watching a music awards show with my wife and they projected an AR image of Michael Jackson onto the stage. The image gave a full performance for the crowd and the imagery was nearly flawless. Great potential with this technology and great post Tammy.

  7. Tammy,

Thank you for providing the app list of AR platforms and the video. AR is constantly evolving and if used correctly would be a very useful tool for education to include instructional design and development. It seems there is no limit to technology and its uses in the instructional design realm. It will be difficult to keep up with it growth.

  8. Tammy,
That video was really quite fascinating. My daughter is already addicted to augmented reality and we use Jig Space already to explore coral reefs. We also like the virtual museums visits from Mandy’s blog which the video reminded me off. My daughter would probably go crazy over those dinosaurs. I cruised on over to the NatGeo page to see if they had any exhibits that would be in our area but their schedule is fairly limited right now because of COVID. I did find some more of their AR experience exhibit videos posted on their page and hopefully in 2021 or 2022 I will be able to take my children to check one out. Thanks for another wonderful blog experience.

  9. Tammy,

What an awesome video! I am always amazed at how cool Augmented Reality is. Before your blog, I had no idea what the capabilities of this technology really were. After your insights I now understand what this technology is capable of. I think you are 100% on point with being super excited about what this technology can do with our future in the education field and the Army. This technology is going to take field trips to a whole new level. The ability to use this technology in the classroom will provide the children of the future the ability to critically think and problem solve on a whole new level. Thanks again for helping me understand all the cool things Augmented Reality brings to the world. Have a great day!
